Thanking him for the kind gift of his Intaglios (published 1871) and responding to his first reading of the sonnets. Giving his opinion that the book would have been better if it had been "shorn of its less representative moiety," but saying that "on the whole it certainly seems to me that this volume brings you before the reader more in the truest spirit of your work than did the other one. Its best points are exquisitely rendered."
